Summary
The Opal Card was used by people to pay for public transport in NSW, Australia. Being a government project, the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) philosophy was adopted in the design thinking and execution of the design to maximise inclusiveness. It needed to be accessible to everyone ranging from 8 to 80 years old with all kinds of possible impairments. This website is AA-compliant, with certain parts AAA-compliant with WCAG guidelines. A diplomatic way of working was necessary to foster stakeholder alignment across different governmental departments. Clear communication, evidence-based decision-making, and good listening were needed to leverage knowledge collected from different domain experts in order to produce an outcome that satisfied various business goals and is ultimately easy to use by the general public.
